Visual Studio 2013 error: ‘Windows.props’ not found.

Recently I had encountered an error while building your project in Visual Studio 2013 running in Windows 8.1 OS due to installation of Windows 8.1 Phone emulator which says File ‘Windows.props’ not found. See Files (x86)Microsoft SDKsPortablev12.0&o2=Portable for more information.

In more detail the error says “C:Program Files (x86)MSBuildMicrosoftVisualStudiov12.0AppxPackageMicrosoft.AppXPackage.Targets(451,9): error APPX1639: File ‘Windows.props’ not found. See Files (x86)Microsoft SDKsPortablev12.0&o2=Portable for more information. “

Basically these property files are located in C:Program Files (x86)Windows Phone Kits8.1DesignTimeCommonConfigurationNeutral which are supposed to be located in C:Program Files (x86)Windows Phone Kits8.1ReferencesCommonConfigurationNeutral

Below screenshot is what the error looks like in VS IDE.

I might had got this error after I tried to install Visual Studio 2015 Preview and since Windows Phone SDK 8.1 was not installed properly. This error specifically comes from the PCL projects in my solution which is targeting for various platforms. So I went through performing some steps to resolve the issue.

Step1: Download Windows SDK for Windows 8.1 from the following location and install it. Run the sdksetup executable from the location where Windows 8.1 is installed like C:Users{username}Downloads……

Step 2: Repair your Visual Studio 2013 version from Program and Features in Control Panel. I still saw the issue didn’t get resolved.

Step 3: I started installing Visual Studio 2013 Update 4 from the following location. This installed Windows Phone SDK 8.1 and then when I started rebuilding the solution having PCL projects, I found no build errors.

Lucky the issue got resolved. If anyone of you are facing similar situation kindly perform Step 1 and Step 2. This might resolve your issue
